Geocache Description:

Cache is located in Marshall County Conservation's Bear Grove County Park with permission of MCCB. Please park at the given waypoint. You will need to wear long pants while searching for this one as well as bug spray during the summer months. BYOP. Winter-friendly, but I don't recommend walking around back here during the winter.

Bear Grove is a good place to learn about Meteorology. Weather, you ask? Yep. You'll notice that there are a large number of trees back in this area on your way to the cache site that appear to be either "bent" or completely toppled/broken off. This isn't just any meteorological event that causes this, but rather a unique event known as the "derecho." This is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a land-based, fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms. Derechos can carry hurricanic or tornadic force and can deliver torrential rains and perhaps flash floods as well as strong winds. Winds during this particular storm were measured at over 100 MPH in parts of Marshall County. These trees were probably victims of that as this particular derecho was very strong across this part of the county. The derecho of 2011 began SW of Des Moines and lasted all the way to Ontario before dying out!

And you thought weather wasn't interesting? Ha! Enjoy the cache!
