Geocache Description:

A very recognizable feature along the Copper Bay Road.

This cache is located close to the "Copper Bay Rock". Its official name is "Siwash Rock", according to K. Dalzell, the author of the very famous "Queen Charlotte Islands, Book 2: Of places and Names" (Page 273). It is a 62 foot high pillar of stone just off the road, with its base in the ocean at higher tides.
The rock itself, and still according to Dalzell, is in the vicinity of an old mine shaft, now filled in, that was dug in 1862 by an Australian prospector in the hopes of finding copper. The Copper Bay is named after this mine shaft, that unfortunately never gave more than a few traces of copper and very little ore.
A part of Copper Bay, only a few kilometres to the south, is an indian reservation and is a very popular fishing spot for trout, steelhead, but also for salmon, especially Coho. There are quite a few fishing shacks and cabins in the Bay.
It is possible to get to the shore and the base of the rock, but it can be a bit of a scramble and difficult at very high tides. There are a few ropes hanging from the rock but it is not advisable to attempt a climb.
The cache is close to the road, and not on the beach below, but on a rocky outcrop, just overlooking the base of the rock. There is a tall spruce near the cache. The cache itself is hidden under a big flat rock.
The best is to park a little bit south of where the rock is (less than 100m) and walk on the road to the cache site, as it could be a traffic hazard to park on the road itself.
