Leptoceratops: Hello!
I'm archiving your cache as it has been disabled for more than a one month and it is lost or completely damaged. Usually caches are visited and maintained within 30 days after disabling.
If you wish to unarchive your cache then please contact me using GC code or link of this cache.

If there are still leftovers from container I would appreaciate if other players could collect them so that there are no trash in the nature.

Happy geocaching!

Geocache Description:

[LV] Slēpnis veltīts Olaines ķīmiskās rūpniecības vēsturei.

[EN] This cache is dedicated to the history of Olaine chemical manufacturing.

B.Y.O.P.

p.s. slēpņa konteinera sagatavošanā izmantoti ķīmiskie materiāli no OlainFarm :)

Slēpnis atrodas pie ceļa, pa kuru darba dienu rītos un vakaros intensīvi pārvietojas gājēji. Esiet uzmanīgi!

===================================================

[EN] First industrial activities in this region started around 1939 with increasing volumes of peat extraction in nearby mires. However the real rush and brain power concentration here started in late 50’s of last century when Communist party of Soviet Union made a decision in favor of fast development of chemical production and decided to make Olaine the regional center of chemical manufacturing. At this time construction of several new chemical factories started here.

At the end of next decade plastic manufacturing plant, chemical reagent factory (now chemical plant „Biolar”) and experimental glue factory are working in Olaine. At this time also a decision was made to start construction of a new chemical-pharmaceutical factory here (now „OlainFarm”). At the end of 1960’s half of Olaine population was employed in chemical industry.

Few facts:

Glue factory was moved from Riga to Olaine in 1959. This plant mainly produced gelatin and animal glue (aka bone glue) from animal bones and tissues.

Plastic manufacturing plant started operation in 1961. The main part of its production was composed of polyethylene, amino and phenol plastics. In 1963 the plant reached its peak number of employees – 1914 and managed to produce 13,000 tons of plastic.

Olaine chemical reagent factory started operation in 1963, producing mainly different sorts of chemical reagents, ion-exchange resins, biochemical preparations and itaconic acid. There were 150 scientific laboratories located in research building of the plant.

In order to produce 1kg of peroxidase enzyme which was used in medicine and clinical research, the plant had to process 30 tons of horseradish.

Initially 55 million ruble budget was allocated for construction of chemical-pharmaceutical factory in 1968. During soviet times this plant mainly produced different sorts of antibacterial  agents, antivirus drugs (incl. Remantadine, which is still produced), anti-cancer drugs and heart disease medications.

The production volume of the factory in 1976 was sufficient to supply all manufacturing plants in Soviet Union with respective active chemical ingredients, intermediates and substances.

During 2009 the stock price of “OlainFarm” was raised by 160%.

p.s. some chemical substances from OlainFarm were used in preparation of this cache container :)

Cache is located near a trail which seems to be quite busy on weekday mornings and evenings. Beware of mugglers!
