Geocache Description:

SI VAS EN COCHE, DEJARLO ARRIBA _____________________________________________________________________________________ Shrine of Saint Steven ruins The Shrine of Saint Steven is situated along an old private road that runs along the river Duero. This building is now visible after recently being cleared of the overgrown vegetation that covered the ruins. It sits next to an old pier that housed the famous boat of Pino that was used to cross the river prior to the construction of the bridge "Requejo” in 1914. It is believed that this building was constructed using stones from another shrine ruin, either Sancil or San Gil, whose stones actually came from roman ruins excavated in "El Picón". The Shrine of Saint Steven is documented in the catalog of Gómez Moreno, at the beginning of the 20th century, however it was erroneously referred to as Saint Sebastian, including a transcription of two of the epitaphs that were visible then, however since then many have disappeared. In the last few years during the restoration and cleaning several stele fragments have been cataloged that up until today were undiscovered. The origin of these steles is unknown, since the associated cemetery is yet to be discovered. Gómez Moreno mentions discoveries of graves with steles and stone pig monuments known as "verracos" in the hillside of "El Picón" that faces the church, however the exact location is not mentioned. IF YOU COME BY CAR, LEAVE IT ABOVE.
