To Kill a Mockingbird

This book was written by Harper Lee and published in 1960. This book is often read in middle schools around the country as it is an important historical piece that deals with the issues of morality and racism but the author manages to mix these topics in with some funny stories. The book is based on the observations of a young girl named Scout Finch who lives with her brother Jem and her father Atticus. Her days are fairly carefree and spent roaming the town during the days of the Great Depression. Scout and Jem are both fascinated by and terrified of their neighbor Boo Radley, whom no one has seen in years but starts leaving the children presents in the hole of a tree between their houses. Her father Atticus Finch is a lawyer and takes on the case defending a man named Tom Robinson, a black man accused of a terrible crime. The trial is a major event for the town and Atticus Finch struggles to do the right thing for the accused. So what happens? Is Tom Robinson found guilty or not? Does the Finch family suffer for helping the black man? This is definitely a must-read book!

I’m pretty sure that Boo Radley would have liked geocaching. He would leave little treasures in the knot of a tree in his yard for his neighbors Scout and Jem. Sound familiar? This is a book I’ve read a few times and was very moved every time. I can’t imagine living in a time with so much hatred towards other races and am happy that real people throughout history have stood up for racial inequality, despite the hardships, and we don’t live in times quite this bad any more. I loved all the silly stories of Scout, some of them more serious in nature than appeared to me the first time I read it.

About this series

When I initially sat down and started writing down the titles of classic children’s books I soon found a very long list. I decided to limit myself to some that are books that I actually read when I was a child, most of which I read several times, and loved. I still had a hard time narrowing down my search. There are so many fabulous books out there and the classics are still read for a reason, they’re great literature! So dust off your library card and go check out some of these wonderful books. I am initially hiding 9 caches for the Waukesha Janboree and it was not easy to only choose 9 classic books. Maybe you could include in your log whether or not you’ve read the book and what you took away from it.
