Geocache Description:

A church micro in the pretty village of Hartley Wintney, Hampshire.

The cache is not at the given co-ordinates which is for a war memorial just outside the church. The information you need can be found here or a short walk away.

The name Hartley Wintney was recorded in the 13th century as Hertleye Wynteneye which means “the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta’s island”. Winta was probably a Saxon who owned the island in the marshes where a priory of Cistercian nuns was founded in the middle of the 12th Century.

The parish church of ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST was built in 1870, and consists of an apsidal chancel, north and south transepts, with a north porch, nave, and north and south aisles with porches. There are also a vestry, an organ chamber, and a north-west bell-turret containing one modern bell.

The walls are of brick with stone dressings, and the roofs are slated. All the internal fittings are modern.

To find the final co-ordinates, you need to use the following equation:

N 51 EA.(J-H)(BxC)D   W 000 53.(B+F)(H+K)(E+G)

The phone number of the church = 01252 ABCDEF

The number of people with the surname Tocock being remembered = G

The number of seas being referred to = H

The year that the Jubilee bench on the cricket green was vandalised = 19JK.
