"The stonewalls at Anou area"
There are a lot of stonewalls seen everywhere in Sakamoto district. These skillfully made natural stonewalls are called "Anou-shu Zumi" which means "the walls piled with stone by the Anou people". The walls were made in Sakamoto by the stonemasons of Anou. They are seen in the rows of houses in Sakamoto as a major factor in creating the beautiful scenery of this district. The stonewalls at Anou area were made by piling up uncut, natural stone. Although they look rough and simple, this special way of piling the stone gives the wall strength and stability. The secret in the design is that the center of gravity is placed two-thirds above ground level. In addition, each wall is stuffed inside with various sized smaller stones to make for excellent drainage. This prptects the wall from collapsing from rainwater. Owing to such skill by Anou stonemasons, these walls have survived wind and snow for hundreds of years. (The Otsu City Government)
「穴太衆積みの石垣」
坂本では、町の至る所に石垣を見ることができます。ほとんど手を加えない自然石の石面を巧みに利用したこの石積みは「穴太衆積み」と言われています。一般に「穴太衆」と呼ばれる、坂本穴太を本拠地をした石工集団の技術によって築かれました。「穴太衆積みの石垣」は当地（坂本）の美しい町並みをつくりだす、重要な景観要素となっています。
穴太衆積みの特徴 - 堅牢さの秘密は石の内側に -
石積みの技としては、大きく分けて、自然石をなんの加工もせず、そのまま積む「野面積み」と、石の面を槌でたたいて、おおざっぱに加工した石を組み合わせて積む「打込みハギ」、のみで加工した石を隙間なく組み合わせて積む「切込みハギ」の三種類があると言われています。
穴太衆積みは「野面積み」を代表する積み方で、一見粗野に見えますが、堅牢さは比類ないものがあります。その秘密は、積み石の比重のかけ方にあって、表面から１／３奥のところに重力がかかるように設計されており、さらに土の水ぶくれによる崩壊を防ぐため、石垣の奥に栗石層、その奥に小石をつめていくなどして排水を良くする工夫が施されています。
このように目に見えない部分に、穴太衆積みならではの技が潜んでおり、それが何百年の風雪に耐え得る堅牢さ生み出しています。（大津市）
