Geocache Description:

A J.R.R.Tolkien puzzle cache

This puzzle cache takes us to the world of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R.Tolkien. In Chapter 5, Riddles in the Dark, Bilbo and Gollum play the game of riddles; if Bilbo wins, Gollum will show him out of the mountain caves; if he loses, Gollum gets to eat him...

In order to find this cache, you must solve these same riddles -- either by yourself, or read Tolkien's book. Here is a link to chapter 5 of "The Hobbit".

And here are the riddles:

A. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
"What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?"

B. _ _ _ _ _
"Thirty white horses on a red hill,
First they champ,
Then they stamp,
Then they stand still."

C. _ _ _ _
"Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters."

D. _ _ _ on the _ _ _ _ _ _ _
"An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"But in low place,
Not in high place.""

E. _ _ _ _
"It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter."

F. _ _ _
"A box without hinges, key, or lid,
Yet golden treasure inside is hid."

G. _ _ _ _
"Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking."

H. _ _ _ _
"This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down."

After solving the riddles, you must add up the letters in each answer, using A=1, B=2, .., Z=26. Only add the letters you must find, not the letters already provided.

The final coordinates are:
N 38° 03.[(A + B + C + H)*3 + 10]
E 23° 48.[(D + E + 2*F + G)*3 + 10]

Expect to find the cache hidden in the same way Gollum would have hidden his precious treasures!

N 38° 03.[(A + B + C + H)*3 + 10]
E 23° 48.[(D + E + 2*F + G)*3 + 10]

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
