All Saints’ Church, Southerndown
The church is well worth a visit, but unfortunately it is usually locked except for
services and by appointment. This small church has had a devoted and friendly congregation over the years. It is easily accessed, with convenient parking outside. There is usually evensong at 6.00pm on the first, second and third Sundays of the month and Holy Eucharist at 8.30am on the second Sunday and at 6.00pm on the fourth.
Henry John Randall was a local historian and solicitor born in 1877.
He was very generous in bequeathing a trust for a charity having as its objective ‘for payment in support of a clergyman or Scripture Reader for Service in Southerndown Reading Room’ (This was the building that proceeded All Saints.)
The reading room was consecrated and became known as the
Southerndown Mission Room. Services were held on alternative Sunday mornings and evenings in 1877.
It was not until 1908 that there was a feeling to change the building to a church. Finally in 1967 under a Glamorgan County Council road widening scheme, the Mission Room was demolished and a small modern Church was built and called All Saints.
