Geocache Description:

[LV] Slēpnis, maza izmēra lock&lock kastītes izskatā, ir novietots kaļķu cepļa „brālēnā”.
[ENG] Cache is small size lock&lock container, located in the „cousin” of the limekiln.

Veiksmi!

{ENG] Cache is located in the small village „Ceplis” which translates to English as kiln and is exactly what this cache is all about. This village evolved around the former Mežotnes brick kiln, but only a tall chimney and a few buildings are left there from the former times.

Brick kiln was first mentioned in the 17th century and it is said it was established by Duke Jacob. Sadly, kiln production stalled shortly after that.

In 1886 owner of the Mežotne manor Anatol von Liven, built a new brick kiln on the coast of Lielupe. Clay was obtained in mines near the kiln and was transported using horses, then soaked with liquid, formed as bricks and left to dry. Last step was burning these bricks in the oven (more like a fireplace) for 8 days.

Near the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century approximately 20 thousand bricks per year were made this way, but in 1930-ies after industrial evolution (electricity, mechanization) the same amount of bricks was made per day. Kiln was biggest industrial company in this area and it produced not only bricks, but roof tiles, oven pots and drain pipes. Part of the brick kiln was limekiln - most advanced at that time around the whole Latvia. All the raw materials were gathered in mines near the kiln. Products of the kiln were used for buildings in city Bauska.

Second part of the 20th century came with the changes – kiln production stopped and industry destroyed, and at the moment there are buildings from the end of the 19th century still in place (buildings made from the red bricks). Only historical building left there – limekiln.

For the reason limekiln is a private property and was even for sale in 2013, cache is placed in a safer place further away from the historical area, but you can still see it.
