Geocache Description:

The Mississippi River Walk is one of my favorite walks in Dubuque. The combination of rich Dubuque history, awesome Mississippi beauty and interesting wild life is hard to beat, any time of the year. This cache is part of a series of three  caches, including Mississippi River Walk-North, Mississippi River Walk- South and the Mississippi River Walk-Bonus Cache. To find the Bonus cache you first have to complete the North and South cache. The coordinates take you to the parking area in front of River’s Edge Plaza. Walk through the flood wall gates and your journey starts. The Mississippi River Walk North starts at the open pavilion of River’s Edge plaza (N42 29.707  W 90 39.447), follows the path on top of the flood wall past the old Dubuque Star Brewery and ends at the Shot Tower.

To find the cache you have to answer six questions and insert the answers in the following coordinates:

N 42  30.(A)(B)(C)

W 90 39.(D)(E)(F)

The answers to the questions can be found on the 8 informative signs between the open pavilion of River’s Edge Plaza and the Shot Tower. The questions are done in order if you start at the open pavilion so there is no need to back track. Here are the questions:

Question 1: How long is the Mississippi river?

a) 2,350 miles (A=0)

b) 3,400 miles (A =1)

c) 3,900 miles (A =2)

Question 2: In the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s the general public used the Ice Harbor as an ice skating rink and a place to harvest ice. What did a ton of ice cost by 1910?

a) 50 cents (B=0)

b) $10 (B=1)

c) 10 cents (B=2)

Question 3: The Dubuque Star Brewery was prominent in two movies. Which of the following movies did NOT show the Star Brewery:

a) The 1979 movie “F.I.S.T.” featuring Sylvester Stallone. (C=2)

b) The 1989 movie “Field of Dreams” featuring Kevin Costner. (C=3)

c) The 1980 movie “Take this job and shove it” featuring Art Carney. (C=4)

Question 4: When was the Shot Tower constructed?

a) 1842 (D=1)

b) 1856 (D=2)

c) 1898 (D=3)

Question 5: How did the Standard Lumber Company use the Shot Tower from the early 1880's until the company was destroyed in the 1911 lumberyard fire?

a) A Lighthouse (E=1)

b) A storage area (E=2)

c) A Fire Watch Tower (E=3)

For the sixth and final question you have to go to the end of the Riverwalk where you will find some steps leading to a round tower. To the left of the tower you will find a metal survey marker disk embedded in the top of the wall. If you have trouble finding the disk here are the coordinates: N 42 30.038 W 90 39.162

Question 6: What is the year written on the metal survey marker?

a) 1935(F=4)

b) 1945 (F=5)

c) 1955 (F=6)

The cache is hidden very close to the end of the Riverwalk. When you find the cache make sure you write down the North coordinates for the Bonus cache, listed on the lid of the cache. The West coordinates of the Bonus cache can be found in the log of the Mississippi River Walk South cache. Stealth may be required as there can be many muggles in this area.

Enjoy, PJM.
