Vallo Alpino – Alpski zid

Vsi tri bunkerji na eni sliki - vhod // All three bunkers on one picture - entrance.

// Some of the italian signs inside the bunkers from the time of italian occupation.

Vallo Alpino - bunkers

As a result of the 1915 Treaty of London, Italy was rewarded by the Triple Entente by being allowed to annex a large part of Slovenian territory formerly under Austria-Hungary. The danger of oppressed Slovenian populace uprising (potentially backed by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) and the insatiable appetites of the Kingdom of Italy prompted both sides to fortify the ‘Rapallo’ border that cut off a third of Slovenian territory – the Yugoslavs with the Rupnikova linija (‘Rupnik’s line’), and the Italians with the Vallo Alpino (‘Alpine wall’)

Idrija, being the largest wholly Slovenian town in the occupied zone, was given special attention by the occupier in means of building military facilities. The fortifications in the town and its (hinterland/surrounding/sphere of influence) included a modern barracks complex that could hold up to 4000 men plus many smaller of the type in surrounding settlements, supporting facilities and series of bunkers, designed to lead the enemy forces into crossfire.

The vast majority of the buildings from that period still stand, and serve hosting factories, apartment buildings and a psychiatric hospital, and give a special mark to the outlook of the city with its distinct architecture.
