Geocache Description:

This cache will take you from the "mountaintop" to the river. You start at the Fenelon Place Elevator, billed as “the world’s steepest, shortest scenic railway, 296 feet in length, elevating passengers 189 feet from Fourth Street to Fenelon Place.” According to the popular travel website "Tripadvisor", the Fenelon Place Elevator is Dubuque's no.1 tourist attraction.

The coordinates take you to the bottom entrance of the Fenelon Place Elevator, on a public street.  This area can get very busy so you may have to find parking on the side streets. To find the cache you have to answer four questions and insert the answers in the following coordinates:

N 42  29.(A)(B)0

W 90 39.(C)8(D)

The answers for the first two questions can be found at the bottom entrance of the elevator.

Question 1: When you face the elevator entrance on the bottom you see a large wooden electricity pole on your left, with a metal code on it.  What is the code?

1. N677W9 (A = 3)

2. F486W4 (A=4)

3. G456K8 (A=5)

Question 2: The Elevator is operated from the top. How do you let the operator on the top know you that you want a ride up the hill?

1. You sit in the car and push a button to ring a bell (B=7)

2. You speak on the intercom to the elevator operator on top of the hill and request a ride up the hill (B=8)

3. You sit in the car and pull on a cord to ring a bell (B=9)

The answer to the final two questions can be found on the top location of the Fenelon elevator.  I suggest that you take the elevator ride up the hill.  I think you will enjoy the experience. The cost is \$1.50 per person one way, \$3.00 round trip. If you don’t want to take the elevator ride down again there is an alternate way down to your starting location. If you decide to drive to the top location here are the coordinates:

N 42 29.772  W 90 40.172

Question 3: When you exit the elevator you pass through a turn stile which was purchased at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.  What is the word on the turnstile?

1. Fenelon Elevator Company (C = 1)

2. Pull (C =2)

3. Push (C=3)

Question 4. Who was the president of the first board of directors for the Fenelon Place Elevator Company on June 21, 1893?

1. L.C. Bissell (D=5)

2. C.B. Trewin (D=6)

3. Mr. J.K. Graves (D=7)

To get to the area where the cache is hidden you will have to drive a short distance. Parking for the final stage is available at N 42 29.438 W 90 39.905. The cache is a "mighty mega" hidden a moderate walk from the final parking area. There is a logbook, pencil and room for some small swag.

Enjoy, PJM
