Geocache Description:

An unusual expression of feeling in an otherwise restrained setting, this virtual cache features a beautiful statue of a woman broken with grief. The Jerome Avenue Subway Station is nearby.

The Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx is as much arboretum and sculpture garden as graveyard. A walk through the area in which this statue is located, and southward, will reveal a bevy of magnificent mausolea and sumptuous sarcophagi--enough to convince any visitor that Woodlawn is the loveliest necropolis in the great metropolis.

Our virtual cache, the statue, mourns for her lost love, a World War I pilot whose heroic death earned him the Royal Flying Cross and Croix de Guerre. The widow survived to see more wars and more husbands, but when she passed it was with her first love that she was buried. Look on the rose granite plinth for Irene's death date, and report it back to me via email--please do not post it in your visit log here. I will delete any log entries that disclose the secret or fail to email me. Pay your respects, and be respectful of those who have gone before.

Take time to explore Woodlawn Cemetery--in size and beauty on par with Central Park and the Botanical Garden. A hidden wonder, with all the crowds six feet under.
