Geocache Description:

This is a quick church micro placed at my family church - St Luke's, St Albans.

St Luke’s Church can trace a direct line back to St Albans Abbey, as a great-granddaughter church. St Peter’s was a “church plant” from the Abbey, which in turn planted St Paul’s church on Hatfield Road. A small church plant from St Paul’s was established in the 1960s, originally meeting in a mission hut a different site. The community soon grew, and the money was raised to build the current church, where this cache is located.

The building was consecrated in 1969. Later, the halls were extended to include an upper level and when the building was re-consecrated in 1994, St Luke’s was also made a Parish Church.

The interior of the building has recently been refurbished to provide better technical facilities and to replace the pews with chairs. The sanctuary can be easily viewed through the windows.

The cache is placed under the St Luke’s Millennium Yew. To celebrate the Millennium, the Conservation Foundation distributed over 8,500 yew trees to churches, schools, community centres, woodlands and other locations. All the yews, including this one, were propagated from British yew trees over 2,000 years old. The hope is that as many as 1 in 20 of the yews planted will be alive at the next millennium.

Useful and Important Information

  • This cache can be done as a park-and-dash, as you may park in the church car park.
  • The container is not really big enough for swaps and trackables.
  • The cache is low to the ground so is not suitable for wheelchair users unless caching with assistance.
  • Please ensure the cache is replaced so that it is not seen from the road to minimise the risk of it being muggled.
  • The S1 bus stops on Cell Barnes Lane, connecting this cache to the city centre and the St Albans City station.

**PLEASE ENSURE THE CACHE IS REPLACED EXACTLY AS FOUND. DO NOT LEAVE IT ON THE GROUND.**

This cache has been placed with kind permission of the church minister, Rev. Mark Slater and is kindly maintained by my mother!
