I was driving down Wheeler Ridge road as I have done hundreds of times. As I stopped for the stop sign at David rd, I saw a brick structure with a historical marker on it. I can't believe I've never seen it before. So I stopped and read the plaque and decided other people should see it and learn the local history a little more. Perfect place for a cache.
I did a little research on the "Sinks" and briefly here's a little of what I learned.
The "sinks of the Tejon" was the area where, in dry weather, Tejon Creek, which flows down the "Grapevine" canyon, would disappear (sink) into the ground before it could empty into Kern Lake. Between 1858 and 1861 the Butterfield Overland Mail Co. had a stage station near the "sink" location. This stage line carried mail and passengers between St. Louis, Mo. and San Francisco, Ca. This was an important station, because they switched horses for the climb up "Grapevine" canyon.
The actual "sinks" were about 6 miles east of this monument near the end of David rd. The stage station is long gone and the area where the "sinks" were is all agricultural fields. Kern Lake is also gone due to rerouting the Kern River.
Anyway.... It was interesting. Hope you enjoy.
There is only one place the cache could be.
