Geocache Description:

Don’t park on Pine or Bowen Road. There is parking on a side street (Comox Rd) that is right next to the park where this cache is located. And the metal box is Rocky's home, the cache is not there.

Inspired by the name of the Raccoon in the Beatles song from the White album (1968), this cache is a tribute to Procyon lotor, one of the most adaptable species of wildlife in urban areas.  The mural on the metal box was done by Jeff King, an artist that has beautified many structures throughout the city.  Raccoons in Nanaimo were featured on the Nature of Things in an episode titled Raccoon Nation, and the elusive “Spirit Raccoon”, also known as the Champagne or Blonde Raccoon, can be found on Newcastle Island. This is a rare white colour phase of the Raccoon that is similar to the more well-known Spirit Bear of the Great Bear Rainforest. Perhaps we should have a Great Raccoon Rainforest in Nanaimo smiley

Happy caching and remember that raccoons are predators, not pets. Keep the cats inside at night and the garbage can lids tight!
