Mushnikas: Checked on this one today and it looks a little beyond repair. Thanks to all that visited.

Geocache Description:

Stillwell Preserve is a 270-acre preserve and multiple-use area, offering a blend of old field and oak barrens communities. There is much to enjoy at Stillwell such as abundant plant and wildlife and impressive views north towards the tall ridges of the Harbor Mill Moraine in Cold Spring Harbor.

The main draw for mountain bikers & hikers to this park is the 3-mile Loop Trail, which at a point merges with the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail. Be careful walking these trails, as there are a lot of JoePros with GoPros flying down these single-track trails.  People may not know it, but you can actually ride from the north shore to south shore  on this trail. (That's Cold Spring Harbor to Jones Beach)  If anyone had the stamina and time to do a trek like this, the north to south route would be:

1. Billy Joel Town Park  2. Cold Spring Harbor State Park   3. Stillwell Woods County Park   4. Trail View State Park 5. Bethpage State Park  6. Bethpage Parkway trail  7. Massapequa Preserve trail  8. Cedar Creek park  9. Wantagh Parkway bike trail 10. Jones Beach State Park (Robert Moses' favorite pet project)

I have ridden each of these trails separately, but never have  done all in the above sequence, as I do have a life.

... and, for the usual history lesson: According to the Town of Oyster Bay's historical records, not far from this cache, on the South side of Stillwell Lane, on brow of hill at western end of the lane, “a group of stones situated on the brow of a hill reportedly was a slave burying ground.”  TOB 1962

Directions: Get on Rt 25 (Jericho Turnpike) in Woodbury and a little east of the end of Rt 135, turn north onto Southwoods Road.  Go North for 1.3 miles and turn right into Stillwell Woods Park.  As long as there are no soccer/baseball games going on, there should be plenty of parking spots. If there are games, park way in the back, where the bikers park. (also, parking in the back will shorten your walk to gz)  Cache is on a little used trail, not deep in the woods at all. This cache container is attached to a 6-letter toy that was invented in 1943 by a naval engineer trying to develop a meter designed to monitor horsepower on naval battleships.

Please don't close the cache too tight because it may be hard to open for the next finder.
