Geocache Description:

ENG: The word read from both sides and has the same meaning

1920. gadā Rozentāla pīšļus no Helsinkiem pārapbedīja Rīgas 2. Meža kapos.

Janis Rozentals was born on March 18, 1866 in „Bebri” homestead, Saldus parish. Janis finished school in Saldus and continued his studies in Kuldiga District School. After a year and a half, due to lack of money, was forced to end his studies and in 1880 go work in Riga. He worked at a fashion store as a bellboy. Finally he mastered painting skills from the painter J. Celēvičš.

On July 29, 1888 he entered St.Petersburg Academy of Art, painting class, as an external student and graduated from it in 1894.

In 1900 he came back to Latvia, at first he lived in Saldus, then in 1901 moved to Riga. In 1903 in Helsinki he married a finish singer Ellija Forsele. Especially for Janis, Konstantīns Pekšēns, in his own house, Alberta street 12, built him an art studio. (Today the museum of Janis Rozentals and Rūdolfs Blaumanis)

Due to World War I, the family relocated to Helsinki. In 1916 he suddenly got sick and passed away on December 26, 1916 in Helsinki in front of his easel with a paintbrush in his hand. In 1920 he was reburied in Riga, 2. Meža cemetery.
