This is a SideTracked Cache placed near to Falmouth Town Station on the Maritime line between Truro and Falmouth.
With the aim of serving the town centre better than the Falmouth Docks station, this station was opened in December 1970, on an embankment west of the bridge which carries the line over Avenue Road. On opening it was named “Falmouth” station and became the terminus for the branch line. The platform concrete components came from Perranporth Beach Halt, which had closed in February 1963. A wooden shelter was provided at the west end of the platform.
Branch line trains were not allowed to wait at the station, nor drivers change ends because the track was on a steep gradient down towards the old Falmouth Docks station, which had closed. As a result, all trains in fact ran on to the old station to allow the drivers to change ends before returning to the station to start the journey back to Truro.
With the need for this manoeuvre, and also with calls to re-use the old station close to the docks, the latter reopened on 5th May 1975 with the name “Falmouth”. To avoid confusion the new station was renamed “The Dell”. On 3rd October 1988 the original station was renamed “Falmouth Docks” and the Dell became “Falmouth Town”.
