Geocache Description:

Our first Geocache laid with treasure hunters kids in tow, you'll find it easy to get to with safe off street parking.

OBEY the signs - The cache is accessible from SH1 without crossing any fences or land mines, although you may need to "walk the trenches" ;)

Cache is medium sized, with logbook and pen secured in a snaplock bag + the usual assortment of trinkets – there are a few potential bonuses in there for the ftf

The name Waiouru is derived from “Te-Wahi-Oru-Nga-Tangata” which translates into:  “The Place which all must pass through.” This is indicative of its geographical location to the traveller of yesteryear, who in their northward or southward journey travelled a route now known as the Desert Road and others in transit from the Hawkes Bay to Pipiriki on the Whanganui River.

Waiouru is the largest of the New Zealand Army’s installations. The 63,000 hectare training area runs alongside State Highway One for 35 km and its widest point reaches from Ruapehu’s snowline to the Rangitikei River headwaters, approximately 30 km to the east. It includes the Moawhango Dam (part of the Tongariro Power Development Scheme) which is fed from the waters of 22 streams on the southern slopes of Mount Ruapehu by aqueduct under the Desert Road.  The training area is used for live firing, manoeuvres and basic training.

The marae is the home of Ngati Tumatauenga, literally 'the tribe of the God of War', the Māori phrase for the New Zealand Army.

A medium sized cache "planted" beneath the shadow of "Waitangi" (The big hill behind the cache) - a popular walking track for locals.

Laid on Waitangi day (Feb 6th) - an annual NZ holiday to mark the signing of the treaty of Waitangi, we thought that reason enough to name this cache "Waitangi"
