[ENG] The basis for rapid economic development of surroundings of Jelgava city during times of Courland (Kurzeme) Duchy was not only the development of roads’, but also rivers’ infrastructure. During the period from 1561 to 1795 Jelgava district was part of Kurzeme and Zemgale (Semigallia) Duchy. The first duke Gotthard von Kettler established Zaļā (Green), Vircava and other Manors. The Duke and country noblemen supported building of Lutheran Churches in Lielvircava, Kalnciems, Zaļenieki, Sesava, Līvbērze, Dalbe and Salgale. During the reign of Kurzeme and Zemgale Duke Jacob (1642.-1682.) linen weaving-mills functioned in Manors, for example sailcloth in Vircava Manor, iron kiln in Emburga Manor, glass, crystal, mirrors and other luxury items were produced Grīva Manor at Svēte river. The tile and brick kilns functioned in Klīve, Mazplatone, Jaunsvirlauka and Vircava. The readymade products were used locally or shipped to Riga and Lithuania using the navigable rivers – Lielupe and Vircava.

These days during the summer season here is a possibility to agree with the Captain and to get a real shipping experience and navigate Vircava river to Jelgava city and back.
