The 14th Annual Cache In Trash Out Week is scheduled for April 16 – 24, with a second week during September 17 – 25, 2016. An official CITO 2016 digital souvenir will be available for events during the weeks of April 16 – 24 and September 17 – 25, so attending this event could earn you the souvenir, assuming that you haven't already earned it!
As the name suggests ‘Cleaning Up by Kayak’ will involve paddling out on the River Fowey to remove rubbish that has collected in areas that are difficult to reach on-foot. You will need to provide your own method of getting to GZ and please only cache within your limits
What?
This clean-up will take place on the Fowey River, regardless of the weather!
Where?
We will meet at and launch from the additional waypoint, where parking is available for a fee.
The terrain rating for this event reflects the fact that a boat is required to get to the headline coordinates and attend the event without getting extremely wet!
When?
Sunday 17th April 2016 – After a short Health & Safety briefing, we will be launching at 3PM – just before High Tide.
This event is scheduled to last for 1 hour.
How?
Bin bags will be supplied but please bring your own gloves and be aware that any rubbish you collect will need to be transported back to the additional waypoint for disposal.
Health & Safety/Risk Assessment:
The assessment is laid out as follows:
Hazard – People at risk – Risk level – Action required to reduce risk.
• Cuts to fingers from handling broken glass or sharp litter – Volunteers – Low – Wear gloves.
• Slipping on slopes whilst launching/recovering kayak – Volunteers – Medium – Ensure that suitable shoes are worn and that heavy kayaks are carried in teams.
• Back injuries from heavy lifting – Volunteers – Medium – Work as a team when faced with heavy objects – If it is too heavy, don’t move it – just mark it as a waypoint and report it to the event organiser.
• Tripping over bags of cleared rubbish - Volunteers & the public – Low – Ensure all volunteers use the designated collection point away from the paths and walkways.
• Drowning in the River/Being carried away by the tide/current – Volunteers – Medium – The tide will be coming in during the event, and the wind could make the water unstable. The mud at the edges of the River can be soft and very deep so avoid climbing out of your boat onto it. Although I can’t insist on it, wearing a suitable floatation device would also be sensible.
• Injury from aggressive wildfowl – Volunteers – Low – All volunteers to give any wildfowl in the area a wide berth.
• Catching a disease – Volunteers – Low – Gloves should be worn for the work and hands cleaned thoroughly before eating food or drinking. Report any dead animals to the event organiser who will inform the Local Authority. If you do not like the look of something, do not touch it!
If you wish to come to this event, please post a Will Attend log, as if changes need to be made, I will make an announcement log and you will receive notification of the changes
