Beware: A ghost is on Lake Montowac.
This beautiful pond is one of the little know parks in Montville. It is a great location to visit and explore a bit. There are the decaying remains of a pavilion once used for outings and there is the old foundation of a small cabin. You can fish (catch and release only) or you can sit and admire the view, but beware not to rile up the Ghost of Lake Montowac.
The legend is that a beautiful Indian maiden haunts the lake. The girl was supposed to have drowned while swimming in the lake just before her wedding. It is said that her ghost appears on misty mornings and walks on the lake to search for her lover of years ago. The story is that she appears in the mist and promptly departs without causing any trouble. But, if she is angered by intruders she calls upon the ancient spirits to bring thunder and lightning to scare them away.
Legends are usually myths but sometimes they are based on facts, so you are urged to be respectful and not to disturb the ghost.
