Welcome to Mt Dawson.
From this summit you get spectacular views across the Morokoa Gorge, the Howitt High Plains and the Wonnangatta Valley.
Access is reasonably simple, if you have a 4WD.
The best spot for parking is at the parking co-ordinates I have posted, known as Shanty Hollow. There is a very small camping area on the side of a dead end 4WD track. Access to this locality is via Moroka Rd, Kent Rd and then on to Shanty Hollow Rd. Higher ground clearance SUVs may also be able to get here in the drier seasons too. Anything else may need to park a few kilometres back down the road and walk their way in.
I was also able to get very limited data coverage at Shanty Hollow, but this was intermittent and should not be relied upon.
From this location the 4WD track has been closed, but it is still easily to navigate on foot. Water is available from a spring about 700m up the track. About 3 kilometres up the track, near where I have put a reference point, you will see a boulder stopping further access to the old 4WD track. The 4WD track appears to head off to the west, but you are now essentially on the southern part of the Mt Dawson peak. Make your way through the scrub for a little here and you should come across a grassy plain that is the eastern slopes of Mt Dawson. Pick your way up to the summit and you should be able to follow the ridge all the way along to the location of this geocache.
Once you get to the co-ordinates, to make your life easy and so you enjoy the view and don’t spend all your time looking for a cache, the cache is a 200ml sistema, placed under some small rocks, just to the west of the highest snow gum in the area.
