The church's congregation is the oldest on Staten Island, and its first church building was erected on this site in 1715, The present church is the congregation's third and it is the oldest church building on the North Shore of Staten Island, also one of the oldest churches on Staten Island.

The graveyard is the oldest non-private cemetery on Staten Island, and its decorative hand-carved stone grave markers –- in brown and red sandstone –- represent some of the oldest forms of sculpture and folk art in colonial America, attributed to noted carvers from New Jersey. The cemetery probably began as a private burying ground for the Corson family in the 1690s, and later became the burial grounds for most Dutch families on the North Shore
