Die Schleie (Tinca tinca), auch der Schlei genannt, gehört zu den Karpfenartigen (Cypriniformes) und lebt überwiegend am Grund langsam strömender oder stehender Gewässer. Die Grundfarbe der Schleie ist dunkel oliv; eine rot-goldene Zuchtform („Goldschleie“) wird bisweilen in Zierteichen gehalten. Auffallend ist ein hoher Schwanzstiel mit gerade abschließender Schwanzflosse. Das Seitenlinienorgan verläuft fast waagerecht bis zur Schwanzwurzel. Die dicke Haut ist schleimig und mit kleinen Rundschuppen bedeckt. Diese Schleimhaut wirkt neuen Untersuchungen zufolge antibakteriell und pilzhemmend, sowohl für den Fisch selbst als auch für die Brut. Das endständige Maul ist vorstülpbar, dicklippig und mit zwei kurzen Barteln versehen.
The tench or doctor fish (Tinca tinca) is a fresh- and brackish-water fish of the cyprinid family found throughout Eurasia from Western Europe including the British Isles east into Asia as far as the Ob and Yenisei Rivers. The tench is most often found in still waters with a clay or muddy substrate and abundant vegetation. This species is rare in clear waters across stony substrate, and is absent altogether from fast-flowing streams. It tolerates water with a low oxygen concentration, being found in waters where even the carp cannot survive. Tench have a stocky, carp-like shape and olive-green skin, darker above and almost golden below. The caudal fin is square in shape. The other fins are distinctly rounded in shape.
