Bazeilles-sur-Othain, dans son écrin de verdure
Comme accroché aux rives vallonnées de l’Othain, Bazeilles-sur-Othain vous surprendra par la richesse de son patrimoine architectural. De ce camaïeu d’ocre, se distingue un ensemble de bâtiments agricoles délimitant encore la cour rectangulaire de l’ancien château seigneurial de Bazeilles. Notez son pont du XVIe siècle privé de deux arches endormies au fond des eaux, ses deux puits octogonaux, le clocheton à colonnettes de l’église Saint-Martin et les quatre bacs fontaine à tête de Lion du XIXe siècle d’où jaillit encore une eau de source.
Cette eau a longtemps rythmé la vie du village, utilisée pour le moulin et les tanneries encore visibles, mais aussi pour la tuilerie et l’huilerie.
Nestling between the hilly banks of the river Othain, Bazeilles-sur-Othain has a surprisingly rich architectural heritage. In this ochre setting there is a cluster of farm buildings, framing the rectangular courtyard of Bazeilles’ stately castle and the 16th century bridge with two arches lost below the water. Not to be missed are the two octagonal wells, the pillared bell tower on the church of Saint Martin and the 19th century fourbasined fountain with its lionhead, still gushing spring water.
This water has long been a vital source for village life, used mainly to power the mill and tannery that can still be seen, but also for the old tilery and oil mill.
