This cache in on the top of Black Mountain located in Hancock County Maine. It is on public land in the Donnell Pond Unit of the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands.
In my humble opinion the view from Black Mt is one of the best on the eastern seaboard! You will surely agree if you go geocaching on a nice “Wedgewood” day with clear blue skies and puffy white clouds. The hike up is very interesting with lot of nice rocks and ledges to hop to and from. You can amuse yourself by repairing some of the many rock cairns along the way.
To get to the trailhead, drive on Maine Rt 1 to the intersection with Rt 183 between Sullivan and Ashville. Drive on Rt 183 for about 5 miles. Turn left on a gravel road just past an old railroad crossing. The gravel road is marked with a sign for the Donnell Pond Unit. After about 0.4 miles the road splits. Take the right fork to the Black Mt trailhead in about 2 miles. There is turnout parking for a few cars just before the trailhead that takes off to the left.
I suggest you take a Tunk Lake view break at the “amphitheatre steps” near
N 44 35.029 W 068 06.423. You will also certainly appreciate a short side trip to Wizard Pond just off the trail as you begin the final assent. The total hike up is only about 1.2 miles with an elevation change of about 700 feet.
After a maintainence visit on 9/24/05, the cache is now in a red painted ammo box . This should keep the contents dry even in a class 5 hurricane. The cache was also moved to a more rocky location a few hundred feet from the original location to allow for regeneration of vegetation. Contents were spiced up with the addition of the following:
1) lens cleaning cloth.
2) black fly breeding house.
3) small wooden lobster boat.
4) blue, red and green metallic firework pens.
5) Ticonderoga carpenters pencil.
6) a real $5 bill to encourage previous visitors to come back and find the new location.
A thermal space blanket was left for emergency use.
Have a great hike, enjoy life, nurture the Earth and keep on exploring the Universe (I'd like to see a GeoCache on Mars someday)!
