Wickham Bishops railway station served the village of Wickham Bishops, Essex. It was opened on 2nd October 1848 as Wickham, on a branch line from Witham to Maldon East And Heybridge. It was renamed on 1st October 1913. The line and station closed to passenger services on 7th September 1964, and to goods traffic another two years later. The main station building is now a house, and the platform can still be seen in the garden.
This is a cache I've been wanting to place for a long time, so I'm excited to get it out there (my 149th owned cache!) It completes the REALLY SideTracked route from Woodham Ferrers to Witham.
It takes you on a pleasant stroll along the River Blackwater from Wickham Bishops to Witham, adjacent to the old train line. You can listen to and look out for an array of different birds. A large portion of it follows the footpath through a golf course, so watch out for flying balls. You must keep your dog on a lead in the golf course, and keep an eye on geokids as the river is deep and has no fence. The route can get fairly muddy.
You have two options for the final. After collecting the info, you can either carry on the walk to the cache, or you can go back to the start and drive to the final. There is lots of parking available at GZ. If you choose to walk the length, it's about 2km in each direction. Drive in the winter, walk in the summer, perhaps?
Just for fun, if you find any lost golf balls, why not pop them into the container. You can find a few at GZ. I've already placed two inside.
