Geocache Description:

During the month of May, Benton County joins communities across the nation to celebrate our diverse and irreplaceable heritage. This year, PreservationWORKS and Visit Corvallis are sponsoring a Geocaching Coin to honor Benton County's stories.

Historic preservation honors the places that people treasure, sparks renewed community pride, brings new investment, jobs and economic energy to historic commercial areas, conserves cultural landscapes, and celebrates the built and natural environments. The Historic Benton County Coin Challenge introduces participants to a variety of local heritage sites, not only buildings, but cemeteries, a Native American site, and locations of important early industries. We will have a kick-off event at Avery Park at 9:30 am, Saturday, May 6, 2017 where we will distribute Passports and explain the Challenge requirements. There will be 17 traditional caches and 10 virtual locations to explore. For those who would like to use a bicycle for the Challenge (useful for avoiding potential parking issues), there are a sufficient number of sites to qualify for the coin within a 15 mile loop. For those with cars, parking for the event is located south and north of the event site. (The south site will need to be vacated by noon.) (see map for waypoints)

Coins will be distributed for completing at least 15 finds. For those who find all of the sites, they can enter for a prize drawing at the Historic Preservation Awards later in the month. You do not have to be present at the drawing to win, and you do not have to turn in the completed form at the time you pick up the coin. The form will have to be received at the Corvallis Visitor's Center at least 2 days prior to the drawing. The Coin Challenge will continue until all 200 coins have been distributed. More details will be available at the event and on the Passport. A copy of the Passport will be added to this cache page after May 7th. In order to accommodate as many people as possible, the coins are limited to one per family.

Please log a "Will Attend" and put this Challenge on your Watch List so you can be notified of any updates or changes.

There will be a few passports available outside the door at "Visit Corvallis" or inside during business hours. There are plenty of coins still available. The waypoints listed below are only the virtuals, 17 actual caches are also part of this challenge. See the Passport.
