“According to legend, this is how Keephills was named. The district was offered as a First Nation, but the Chief said, “Keep hills”. They didn’t want the hills but they preferred the shores and trees around Wabamun Lake.” (Hrasko & Carvel Unifarm, 1976) That was the start to the Paul First Nation and Keephills. Since then, Keephills was the first hamlet to be relocated to accommodate a coal mine for thermal power generation in 1982. The old site is just southwest within the Transalta lands.
