Aythya nyroca aka Zarro-Castanho aka Ferruginous duck
Este pequeno zarro, que é raro em toda a Europa, é um dos patos menos frequentes, de entre aqueles que aparecem anualmente em Portugal.

Identificação
A plumagem castanha, com as infracaudais brancas, são as características que permitem identificar este pato mergulhador. Em voo é visível uma barra alar branca.
Abundância e calendário
Muito raro, com apenas alguns registos anuais, o zarro-castanho é uma espécie de ocorrência regular no Algarve e irregular no resto do país. Embora se trate principalmente de uma espécie invernante, já foram registados casos de nidificação no Algarve.

Identification
The breeding male is a rich, dark chestnut on the head, breast and flanks with contrasting pure white undertail coverts. In flight the white belly and underwing patch are visible. The females are duller and browner than the males. The male has a yellow eye and the females have a dark eye.
Plenty and seasons
Very rare, with only a few annual records, the Ferruginous duck is a regular occurrence in the Algarve and irregular in the rest of the country. Although it is mainly a wintering species, there have been cases of nesting in the Algarve.
