Geocache Description:

Everybody needs good neighbours or so the song of the long running tv series goes. You might wonder what that has to do with a series of geocaches about the Errinundra plateau.

Due to widespread interest on the forestry issue about a dozen actors from the Neighbours cast, approached the Goongerah Environment Centre about filming a story line for the show on getting involved in protests. It was known what the forestry industries response was going to be and that would be not to allow actors being filmed in conservation protests.

So they decided to work around this. A platform close to the top of one of the trees here was erected. This was also to be used to make scientific observations in the tree tops. Celebrities where also invited to the area, that would allow them to get the stories in magazines and newspapers. Olivia Newton John had accepted an invitation to the area, but I do not believe it ever went ahead. A series of Women's Magazines did run stories on her commentary on forest protection issue.

Filming was also started on Neighbours crew, acting as it was a tree sit at an active forest blockade, combining it with existing footage that would have shown the action from the view point of the actor rather then them being filmed. Very soon, the forestry industry found out about these activities and filming was stopped and the script was canned.

Having been on both sides of the debate, I am well aware of what the contents of messages would have been like. Probably the same reason that John Williamson another invitee to the tree sit, rarely plays his song "rip rip woodchip" live anymore.

The actual tree used is about 45 metres from the road in one of the shining gums. The platform was dismantled at the start of winter, not having achieved much in raising awareness. Probably because of its distance from Melbourne.

While your here why not take the time to appreciate the Sassafras trees along the creek line or the amazing fern glade heading up the hill opposite.
