The Athens of the North Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Haggis Hunter: I can't believe that 3 days short of this caches 8th birthday I am archiving it!!

I have been in contact with evilrooster and we have both decided due to the guidelines being completely different to what they were when this was placed that it is probably best to archive this.

Others should take note that when you now change your cache co-ords, even if it is still within the same area or boundary, your cache gets re-reviewed and may get disabled if it doesn't meet the current requirements.

I suppose the popularity of geocaching may well be it's own demise??

Geocache Description:

They say Edinburgh is built on seven hills (yes, I know that’s another ancient city). Subsequent construction has filled in most of the valleys between them. Calton Hill is one of the few that stands separate from the city to this day.

You're right near the original site of the city’s observatory, where the precise time was determined for the One O’Clock Gun, to help sailors set their ships’ chronometers in the nearby port of Leith. And as the city has grown, the area has served as a useful spot for various memorials and monuments.

The most outstanding of those monuments was to be a reproduction of the Parthenon in Athens, as a war memorial. The money ran out before the building was half done, leaving a poignant reminder of lives half-finished, as well as a notable structure in a city full of notable structures

The cache is just an excuse, of course. Come to Calton Hill for the views, for the monuments, and for the beauty of this spot only five minutes from Princes Street. Come at one to see the ball drop at the top of the observatory, and stand where you can see the One O’Clock Gun fire from the castle.

The cache itself is slightly larger than a film canister, so it's fairly small. Drop off a coin, or a pair of earrings, and sign the log. Bring your own pen.

The cache is in Muggle Heaven so please ensure the cache is well and discreetly hidden when you leave.

Note: This is a frequently visited cache, please use both sides of paper in the logbook. Thank you.

Public transport information: This cache is ten minutes' walk from Waverly Station, Edinburgh's main train station.
