Geocache Description:

Luksurija

"Poosebljena prispodoba razvratnosti, pohotnosti in nečistosti."

Luxuria

"A personified allegory of debauchery, lust, and impurity."

On the slope on the sunny side of the Little Mountain, on the Great Meadows, stands the cemetery church of St. Thomas in an extraordinary environment. At the core is a medieval building with a rectangular nave and a presbytery on the east and a northern tower that gives a majestic appearance especially from the view on the Hills. It is one of the oldest and most important churches of the former extensive fishing parish. In the mid-14th century, it was built by the local lord count Oton Ortenburški. The Patriarch of Aquileia even demanded that the count establish a vicariate there. As such and as a parish it is mentioned in 1444, later it is abandoned. The flat roofed nave from the 14th century with a short gable-roofed presbytery from the 17th century reveals important remains of medieval paintings inside. On the southern outer wall is a poorly preserved fresco - the motif of St. Christopher. The presbytery is gable-roofed and ends with interesting figural masks that still have preserved color. In the church, an older tabernacle and an altar painting of the unfaithful Thomas has also been preserved. An important fragment of the painting of Luxuria, the demon of lust, from the 16th century has been preserved. On the fresco we see a standing naked female figure, slightly turned in a step. The left side of the body has collapsed, on the right we can clearly see that a dragon is biting the woman in the breast, causing severe bleeding throughout the body. She has a headdress with a child's head. To paint a Renaissance sensual act on the nave side of the triumphal arch, even if the motif has a moralizing or warning meaning, it must have been considered an unusual act in those times. A naked female body, being poked by snakes or bitten by dragons, is Luxuria, a personified allegory of debauchery, lust, and impurity.

Church of St. Thomas, July 2017

We arrive at the church by an asphalt road over the Great Meadows and follow the signs for the cemetery, which lead us right to the church. On the Great Meadows, we can admire the Church of St. Joseph. Along the way to St. Thomas stands the stone house Kajža, which is considered one of the oldest houses in the wider area (1750), with an exceptionally well-preserved black kitchen and old farm stove, which is definitely worth a visit (Reference point - R1). When we arrive at the cemetery, we park and enjoy the beautiful views. When searching for the treasure, we behave respectfully.
