Geocache Description:

Seattle has many unusual architectural structures. The Space Needle, Seattle Public Library, MOPOP, the Hat n’ Boots, The Kingdome. OK - some last longer than others. I am an architect and am fascinated by structures with innovative construction details. Hence, Seattle’s giant Ferris wheel at Pier 57 on Elliot Bay. Known as The “Seattle Great Wheel”, it has become one of Seattle’s iconic landmarks since it opened on June 29, 2012.

At 175 feet in height, this really big wheel is the tallest Ferris wheel on the West Coast of the United States. Seattle was the third city in North America to construct a wheel of this design, following the Niagara SkyWheel at Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls, Canada and the larger Myrtle Beach SkyWheel in South Carolina. However, the Seattle wheel is the only one of the three to be built over water and extending 40 feet out over Elliott Bay.

The Wheel spins at a dizzying rate of 4 minutes per revolution – so hang on! Also, the wheel is beautifully illuminated at night, frequently changing colors in celebration of local occasions or sporting events.

PLEASE NOTE: THE CACHE IS ONLY AVAILABLE BETWEEN THE FOLLOWING HOURS:

Summer: Sun-Thurs 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM, Fri-Sat 10:00 AM - Midnight

Winter: Mon-Thurs 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM, Fri-Sat 10:00 AM - Midnight, Sun 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM

TO CLAIM CREDIT FOR THIS VIRTUAL YOU MUST MESSAGE ME:

1. The number of bolts that secures one of the eight supporting legs of the wheel to its concrete base.

2. At the base of the wheel, on the west side – just behind the fence but directly beneath the wheel - is a cross brace formed by metal rods connected to a metal plate where they cross. How many rods are attached to that plate?

Finally - post a photo with your log of yourself WITH THE WHEEL. If you are camera shy, post a picture of your hand holding your GPS or another personal object such as keys, hat, backpack, or purse....etc. The intent is to make your photo distinctive. Creative and artful photos are encouraged. A close-up portion of the wheel must be included in your photo. No photos of the Wheel at a distance are allowed. I will delete any log that does not have the required photo. Please do not include answers to the above questions with your logs. They will be deleted.

All logs failing to meet these requirements will be deleted.
