English description
With its nearly thousand years of history, built on the top of a limestone cliff, the Château de Saumur is overlooking the town and the Loire. Considered as the last example of the princely palaces built by the Valois dynasty, it has undergone many transformations since the 11th century because of the many functions it had.
Actually, after being a 13th century fortress, the Castle became a manor house of the Dukes of Anjou, such as King René, in the 14th and 15th centuries. Residence for the town governors during 16th and 17th centuries, it then was a prison before becoming an arms and ammunitions depot in the 19th century. Town of Saumur bought the castle in 1906 and it has been listed as a National Heritage Site since 1964.
The Château de Saumur contributed to the inscription of the central part of the Loire Valley to UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2000. " The Loire Valley is noteworthy for the quality of its architectural heritage, in its historic towns such as Blois, Chinon, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours, but in particular in its world-famous castles".
