A multi-part cache leading you on a tour of Venice, ending up with a micro treasure at the end.
This cache took us half a day to set up- It is likely to take a similar time to solve. It is a 7 parter, the first 6 parts are virtual sites, of interest in themselves, data from which lead to a final micro cache.
It does not matter which order the parts are conducted in but all are needed for the final whole.
Part the First- "The Bells, the Bells"
N 45 26.069
E 012 20.332
Nice and easy this one- we could have just given an elevation (at least since 1912, before then it didnt have one!).Its a good place to view the whole of the trip before you. When you get to the top count the number of bells.
Part the second- "A reminder of nastiness amidst beauty"
N 45 26.024
E 012 19.396
This is a beautiful and often overlooked campo, a haunt of artists and students. Within is a memorial to something less pleasant. Count the number of figures on this memorial.
Part the Third- "Hunchback"
N 45 26.324
E 012 20.108
This ugly statue was a welcome sight in Venice's colourful past. Miscreants would be flogged across a nearby bridge and run a gauntlet of angry citizens. They would be spared if they could make it to this figure. He has been restored and the date of his restoration is above him in Roman Numerals- convert this to a 4-digit figure.
Part the Fourth- "Dragon-Slayer"
N 45 26.124
E 012 20.681
A tough campo to find, if you can spot a highly-dangerous looking bell-tower you are nearly there! There is a mosaic of a famous slayer looking at two dates: xxxx- 1998. Note down the "xs".
Part the Fifth- "Wages of Sin"
N 45 26.746
E 012 19.910
There is a wall here with 3 intriguing statues. One has a metal nose. The story goes that these were merchants who tried to cheat an old lady and were consequently turned to stone. The leading merchant (ol metal-schnoz) is just to the immediate left of a house with a 4-digit number. Note down the number.
Part the Sixth- "A sorry tale"
N 45 26.356
E 012 20.474
This is a real gothic horror story. The tale is that a mad turk ripped out his mothers heart and ran to this spot with the dripping organ in one hand and the knife in the other. The heart spoke to him (did I mention that he was mad?) and in his fright he tripped up the steps, fell into the canal and drowned. Apparently the area is still haunted by his restless spirit.
There is a picture of him in the act scratched into the wall at this location. it is hard to know about unless you have some local knowledge- and this is what I have just given you! Directly behind this ancient piece of graffiti are the very steps he tripped up on the bridge. There are 2 sets of these steps. Note how many steps there are in each set.
Part the Seventh "Don't Look Now"
Right- you now have the data necessary for the final micro-cache.
Its co-ordinates are
N 45. AB. CDE
E 012 VW. XYZ
To find A- take the 4th digit from part 3 from the 2nd.
To find B- Use the 4th digit from part 3
To find C- How many steps were there in each set in part 6?
To find D- What is the result of the 4th digit in part 4 divided by the 2nd?
To find E- What is the 1st digit in part 5 added to the 4th?
To find V, take the 3rd digit in part 5 minus the sum of the 1st digit and the 2nd digit.
To find W, take the 2nd digit in part 5 away from the 1st digit.
To find X, - use the 3rd digit in part 4
To find Y- take the 2nd digit in part 4 from the answer to part 2
To find Z- use the answer to part 1 less 2.
Put these together and you will have a final resting place- in every sense. You will need "special equipment" to reach it, but dont worry, this sort of special equipment is used all the time in Venice!
Oh-about the pictures. You might notice that some contain Jerry's Ass. He is fast becomming something of a travel bug on his own. Visit him at (visit link)
