Richland Center Towers Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

jvechinski: Time to retire this one... it had a good run. Thanks to everyone who visited this cache over the last 10 years, and special thanks to those who helped with maintenance to keep this one going for so long.

Court Street has been repaved, widened, and now has a large turnaround at the end... and signs saying you can't park there. There is a chain blocking access to the old parking area, so you either have to park way down the street, walk up, and jump to the chain, or park at Strickland Park and make a steep approach. My guess is the tower people or the city waterworks people or both would like to keep most people out of this area for security reasons. This is a shame because a lot of time and effort was spent about 5 years ago fixing the park up.

Geocache Description:

This is the first geocache hidden in Richland County, Wisconsin. It is in Miner Hill Trail Park on a bluff that overlooks the county seat, the city of Richland Center.

Park at coordinates N 43 20.125', W 90 22.707'. This is a small gravel turn around at the end of Court Street (which becomes Roosevelt Road). Make sure you park somewhere off to the side so you aren't blocking the park entrance road or the driveway of the nearby house... there isn't much room here. (Note that the gate here is usually open and you could drive to the top with a truck... but don't drive to the top, as signs indicate motorized vehicles are prohibited.)

The hike to the cache (approximately .7 miles) starts uphill along a wide dirt road to the top of the hill, and then goes through a small field, and finally ends up along a hiking/cross country ski trail through a wooded area. The cache is not far off one of the trails so it should be an easy field. But be sure to rehide the cache carefully so others using the trails do not discover it.

Cache container is a medium sized Lock-n-Lock plastic container, about 4"x8"x4". It is clear but wrapped in some camouflage netting.

I read about this park in some old tourism literature about Richland Center that I dug up. This tourism literature boasted that this park contains "five scenic overlooks and an old quarry". You'll pass by a number of these overlooks as your make your way to the cache, but the best view of Richland Center itself is around N43 20.177' W90 22.735'.

When I first visited this park in 2002, it seemed almost abandoned with no signs, overlooks choked with brush, and overgrown trails. Since that time, all the trails have been marked with signs and seem to be mowed and maintained regularly. The brush at the overlooks has been cut back to restore the good views, and new railings have been installed.
