Geocache Description:

After our aborted first CITO of the year (sorry again!) we are back !, The first CITO week of 2018 starts on the 21st of April so come and join us for a morning of clearing brambles at York Cemetery and earn your first CITO week souvenir of the year at the same time. Without the efforts of volunteers, the cemetery could not operate as the wildlife and visitor haven it is today.

York Cemetery is a working burial ground. At the same time, it provides opportunities for conservation, education, and informal recreation within a protected environment close to York city center. Volunteers contribute in many ways, helping to maintain and develop the wild and beautiful 24-acre site, rich in local history and ecology.

Our main task on the day will be focused on digging out some of the brash heap area in the old Victorian section of the cemetery, this has become so full it's starting to become a problem to dispose of, so we have organised a very large skip on site that we can hopefully fill up. Our previous CITO events here have made a real contribution to the upkeep of the cemetery and making a start on clearing this area will go a long way to help restore it back to full public view.

At about 12noon we will stop for lunch. Bring a packed lunch and a flask. It might be an idea to bring a bottle of water and some suncream just in case the sun comes out.

You could also take the opportunity to grab the cemetery traditional, multi, puzzle and earth caches whilst you are here.

Important information, please read.

York Cemetery - Bramble Beatdown II CITO

Saturday 21st April  2018 10:00am - 1:00pm

Firstly if you are planning to come then please log a 'will attend' note, mention how many will be in your group, this is extremely important, we had to cancel the last CITO due to illness and unfortunately had people still turn up who hadn't logged attend notices so didn't get the cancellation messages.

Meet us at the cemetery gatehouse (entrance on Cemetery Road), for introductions and a brief H&S chat. We will be the ones wearing bright orange. Come and introduce yourself as Geocachers if you've not been before, we will have a log for you to sign.

We recommend you wear sturdy footwear, as we will be working on uneven ground between gravestones. You can bring your own gardening gloves, the thicker the better! All tools and equipment will be provided (there are gardening gloves available if you forget or don’t have them). If you have a gardening fork available, please bring this with you as it will help with the brash clearing, please ensure it's clearly marked with your name to ensure it doesn't get claimed at the end of the CITO.

Children are welcome, but must be supervised. No dogs are allowed in the cemetery, apart from registered assistance dogs. Please remember that this is a working cemetery and there will probably be people visiting graves.

Our tasks on the day may change depending on the weather, we will update the listing and make announcements accordingly, please ensure you have logged a 'will attend' to receive these updates.
