Ciò nonostante, sappiamo poco di lui, perché mancano quasi completamente attestazioni storiche sulla sua esistenza. Ciò che è risaputo sul grande menestrello medievale, in realtà, è ricavato dalle sue poesie, messe a confronto con i fatti storici. I più cinici affermano che la vita di Walther possiamo solo immaginarcela. Su una cosa le ricerche concordano, ovvero sull’anno di nascita, il 1170.
Certamente Walther von der Vogelweide ci avrebbe accolti con un "willekomen" (benvenuti in tedesco antico) a Laion, la sua terra, da cui è partito nel tardo 12° secolo per conquistare con le sue canzoni e poesie l'intera area germanofona. Walther era la star dei bardi, capace d'intrattenere a corte non solo dame e cavalieri ma anche teste coronate. Nelle sue vesti di professionista sapeva sempre soddisfare i gusti del suo pubblico con composizioni su nobili dame e (meno nobili) fanciulle o liriche dai solenni contenuti, quali il potere, la chiesa e le crociate.

Walther von der Vogelweide war im Mittelalter ein Star, der bedeutendste deutsche Minnesänger und politischer Dichter, dessen Lieder und Gedichte im Deutschen Reich weite Kreise zogen. Trotzdem weiß man über Walther wenig, historische Dokumente über ihn fehlen fast gänzlich. Was man über den großen Sänger weiß, leitet man aus seinen Gedichten ab, die man mit historischen Fakten abgleicht. Zyniker sagen: Walthers Leben muss man sich zusammenreimen. Einig ist sich die Walther-Forschung darüber, dass er um das Jahr 1170 geboren wird.
Wohl so hätte uns Walther von der Vogelweide empfangen, uns "willekomen" geheißen in seiner Heimat Lajen, von der aus er sich im späten 12. Jahrhundert aufgemacht hat, um mit seinen Liedern und Gedichten den ganzen deutschen Sprachraum zu erobern.Walther war der Star unter den Minnesängern, einer, der die Damen und Herren bei Hof zu unterhalten wusste - bis hinauf zu allerlei gekroenten Häuptern. Als Profi durch und durch wusste er, was sein Publikum hoeren wollte, ob es nun nach Gedichten über edle Damen und (weniger edle) Mädchen verlangte, oder doch nach handfesten Inhalten: Krone, Kirche, Kreuzzüge.

Who was Walther?
Walther von der Vogelweide was a medieval star, the most important of the German-speaking minnesingers and a political poet, whose songs and poems had far-reaching effects in the German lands. Nevertheless we know very little about him; there are almost no historical documents concerning him. What is known about this great singer has been derived from his poems, which must be balanced against the historical facts. Or, more cynically put, we have to figure out Walther’s life for ourselves. Research into Walther agrees on one thing: he was born around the year 1170.
Thus would Walther von der Vogelweide have probably received us, bidding us “willekomen” to his home of Lajen, which he left in the late 12thcentury in order to conquer the entire German-speaking world with his songs and poems. Walther was the star minnesinger, the one who knew how to entertain the ladies and gentlemen at court – up to and including numerous crowned heads. As a consummate professional, he knew exactly what his audience wanted to hear, whether it was poems about noble ladies and (not so noble) girls, or works with a more solid content: crown, church, crusades.
