Para reclamar esta earthcache deverá enviar-me, através do meu perfil e antes de qualquer registo, as respostas às seguintes questões. Se algo estiver incorrecto será contactado. Não é necessário esperar por qualquer autorização. Por favor não envie fotografias. Essas são mais úteis no registo.

Nas coordenadas da earthcache há um xenólito no degrau superior da piscina. Um que tem dois olhos, o esquerdo quase quadrado e o direito com forma irregular. Isto visto com a água à frente.

1 – Qual é o comprimento do xenólito? Qual é a dimensão do "olho esquerdo"?

2 – Explique por palavras suas porque é que este xenólito não pode ser considerado um autólito.

3 – Pelo texto classifique a textura do granito do degrau onde está o xenólito segundo a dimensão, tamanho relativo e forma dos cristais que a constituem?

4 – Segundo Norte qual é a direcção do eixo maior do xenólito? (o seu comprimento). Use uma bússola (ou real, do GPSr ou do telemóvel).

Mais a Norte e perto da rampa de acesso, no WP 01, existe outro xenólito com uma forma diferente do anterior.

5 - Qual é o comprimento do eixo maior desse xenólito? E qual a sua orientação segundo Norte?

At the earthcache coordinates there is a xenolith on one of upper step of the pool. One that has two eyes, the left almost square and the right one with irregular shape. This is seen with the water ahead.

1 – What is the length of xenolith? What is the size of the "left eye"?

2 – Explain, using your own words, why this xenolith cannot be considered an autolith?

3 – By the text classify the texture of the step’s granite where the xenolith is, according to the dimension, relative size and form of the crystals that constitute it.

4 – According to North, what is the direction of the major axis of xenolith? (its length). Use a compass (or real compass, GPSR or mobile phone).

Further north and near the access ramp at WP 01, there is another xenolith with a different shape from the previous one.

5 – What is the length of the major axis of this xenolith? And what is your orientation according to the North?

Os xenólitos

Um xenólito (do grego para pedra estranha) é um fragmento de rocha que é envolvido por uma rocha maior durante o desenvolvimento e endurecimento desta última. Em geologia este termo é aplicado quase exclusivamente na descrição de inclusões em rochas ígneas durante a colocação e erupção do magma. Os xenólitos podem ser arrastados ao longo da orla de uma câmara magmática, arrancados das paredes de um tubo de lava ou por diatremas explosivos ou arrastados ao longo da base de um fluxo de lava na superfície terrestre. Um xenólito é sempre mais antigo que a sua rocha encaixante.

Um xenocristal é um cristal individual, estranho à rocha encaixante, incluído numa intrusão ígnea. Como exemplos de xenocristais temos os cristais de quartzo em lavas pobres em sílica e os diamantes em diatremas quimberlíticos.

Apesar de ser aplicado sobretudo a rochas ígneas, uma interpretação mais abrangente pode incluir também fragmentos de rocha incluídos em rochas sedimentares. Por vezes são encontrados em meteoritos.

De forma a ser considerado um verdadeiro xenólito, a rocha incluída tem de ser diferente da rocha encaixante; um fragmento incluído de rocha similar à encaixante denomina-se autólito.

Texturas das rochas

Para além da cristalinidade a textura das rochas magmáticas pode ser descrita pela dimensão e forma dos cristais e também pela relação e arranjo dos seus constituintes. Assim a textura de uma rocha, neste caso um granito, pode ser classificada segundo o tamanho dos cristais, o seu tamanho relativo e a forma dos cristais.

Dimensão dos cristais

Quanto à dimensão, a textura pode ser classificada segundo a visibilidade dos cristais à vista desarmada. Se for esse o caso a textura é fanerítica se os cristais só são visíveis com recurso a um microscópio a textura é afanítica.

Tamanho relativo dos cristais

Quanto ao tamanho relativo, a textura pode ser classificada segundo a relação de tamanho entre os vários cristais que constituem a rocha. Se os cristais têm tamanho semelhante a textura é equigranular se os cristais diferem substancialmente de tamanho a textura é inequigranular. Um tipo particular de textura inequigranular é a porfiróide em que cristais de maiores dimensões estão envolvidos numa matriz fanerítica de grão mais fino.

Forma dos cristais

Quanto à forma dos cristais, a textura pode ser classificada em três tipos e relacionadas com a uniformidade da forma.

1 - Idiomórfica, em que a maioria dos cristais (mais de 90%) têm formas geométricas regulares, os cristais euédricos;
2 - Hipidiomórfica, em que os cristais são subeuédricos ou quando existem conjuntamente cristais idiomorfos, subidiomorfos e xenomorfos;
3 - Alotriomórfica, em a maior parte dos cristais (mais de 90%) têm formas geométricas irregulares; os cristais anédricos.

The xenoliths

A xenolith (Ancient Greek: "foreign rock") is a rock fragment which becomes enveloped in a larger rock during the latter's development and solidification. In geology, the term xenolith is almost exclusively used to describe inclusions in igneous rock during magma emplacement and eruption. Xenoliths may be engulfed along the margins of a magma chamber, torn loose from the walls of an erupting lava conduit or explosive diatreme or picked up along the base of a flowing body of lava on the Earth's surface. A xenocryst is an individual foreign crystal included within an igneous body. Examples of xenocrysts are quartz crystals in a silica-deficient lava and diamonds within kimberlite diatremes.

Although the term xenolith is most commonly associated with igneous inclusions, a broad definition could include rock fragments which have become encased in sedimentary rock. Xenoliths are sometimes found in recovered meteorites.

To be considered a true xenolith, the included rock must be identifiably different from the rock in which it is enveloped; an included rock of similar type is called an autolith or a cognate inclusion.

Rock textures

Besides the crystallinity, the texture of the magmatic rocks can be described by the size and shape of the crystals and also by the relation and arrangement of their constituents. Thus the texture of a rock, in this case a granite, can be classified according to the size of the crystals, their relative size and the shape of the crystals.

Crystal dimensions

As for dimension, the texture can be classified according to the visibility of the crystals to the naked eye. If this is the case the texture is phaneritic if the crystals are only visible with a microscope the texture is aphrotic.

Relative size of crystals

As for the relative size, the texture can be classified according to the size relationship between the various crystals that make up the rock. If the crystals have similar texture size it is equigranular if the crystals differ substantially in size the texture is inequigranular. A particular type of inequigranular texture is the porphiroid in which larger crystals are involved in a finer grain phaneritic matrix.

Crystal shape

As for the shape of the crystals, the texture can be classified into three types and related to the uniformity of the shape.

1 - Idiomorphic, in which most crystals (more than 90%) have regular geometric shapes, euhedral crystals;
2 - Hipidiomorphic, wherein the crystals are sub-hetero-or when there are together idiomorphic, subidiomorph and xenomorph crystals;
3 - Alotriomorphic, in most crystals (more than 90%) have irregular geometric shapes; the anhedral crystals.
