Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Taconic Region’s 2019 Winter Geocaching Series. There are 9 snow-friendly caches in this park complex, Be sure to bring your favorite writing utensil.  Parking and trailhead coordinates are noted below.

Rockwood has had many lives. William Rockefeller bought the property from William Henry Aspinwall in 1886 and it was his summer home until 1922. Rockefeller expanded it from 200 acres to more than 1000.

When he died in 1922, the property was sold to Rockwood Hall, Inc. and developed into an exclusive country club, but it went into bankruptcy during the Depression. In 1937, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. purchased the property from bankruptcy court and leased most of it to the Washington Irving Country Club until 1939. By 1942, Rockefeller razed all the buildings on the property except the gate houses. In 1946, he deeded the property to his son, Laurance, who leased it to New York State for one dollar a year beginning in 1974. It became a State Park in 1983.

This cache will lead you right to the parking area where your winter adventure will begin.
