1918-2018
The Avro Lancaster is a British four-engined Second World War heavy bomber. It was designed and manufactured by Avro as a contemporary of the Handley Page Halifax, both bombers having been developed to the same specification.
The Royal Air Force was founded on the 1st April 1918 and is the oldest independent air force in the world.
Since the RAF’s formation this service has played a significant roll in the defence of the United Kingdom and British military history.
The RAF played a pivotal role in the defence of the country in the Second World War when it took part in its most famous campaign ‘The Battle of Britain’ without the RAF the outcome of the war could have been very different.
Some of the most iconic aircraft were developed and commissioned during the war years from the Spitfire to the Lancaster Bomber. At the same time developments in many other innovations and ideas were developed for example radar.
