Geocache Description:

Observations of the universe surrounding us have been made for millennia. Inspired by an ancient rain gauge from Korea, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheugugi, this cache is dedicated to mankind's pursuit of knowledge of the universe. The evolution of measurement technology continues to be innovative and mind expanding. The nearby LIGO facility was involved in a momentous detection last year, when a gravitational wave event was detected, simultaneously as visible light, infra-red, then radio wave observatories all noted events correlating to the collapse of a neutron star binary pair. Observations at LIGO are combined with other observatories across the globe to detect gravitational waves. The scale is mind boggling. Two masses are suspended 4 km (2.5 miles) at right angles from a central station and Laser Interferometry measures the distance between the central station and the two masses to an accuracy of 10^-18 meter, less than the width of an atom. Gravitational waves cause changes in distance, which when filtered out of the background noise yields the observation. Placed by permission of Kennewick Parks.
