Geocache Description:

The Convent of Santos-o-Novo is a building located on Calçada Cruz da Pedra, no. 44, in Lisbon. It was built in the early seventeenth century, during the reign of D. Philip II of Portugal, for the Commenders of the Order of Santiago. Partly destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, it was later recovered. After the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, the Honorary Commendadoras of the Military Order of Sant'Iago of the Sword remained in the place until the Implantation of the Republic in 5 of October of 1910, date in which the 2º floor was occupied by the School Superior of D. António da Costa, and later occupied by the Sidónio Pais Institute. Currently belongs to the Gatherings. It is a building of great magnificence, which has not yet been completed. The large, square-shaped cloister is developed in arcades of perfect back arches, housing the chapels of Senhor dos Passos and Encarnação, covered with carving, statuary and tiles. The church, with a single nave, with five side chapels, includes gilded carving, polychrome marbles and tile panels, highlighting those that line the walls and narrate the steps of the life of the Holy Martyrs. Its classification as a Property of Public Interest covers the church, the cloister and other dependencies, as well as the outdoor areas landscaped, forming the whole of the convent fence.
