Geocache Description:

English description

Velika planina - alpski biser brez primere

Sestavljata jo jami Mala in Velika Veternica.

As its name indicates, the Gorenjska region is distinguished by mountains (gore means mountains). People of Gorenjska have always lived in close connection with mountains, which is evident from their culture and their past, preserved in museums. Stories from the mountains are a part of the history we share, which can be found in the museums.

Škofja Loka Museum presents Lubnik mountain and items of the Copper Age, Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik introduces Alpine dairy farming and life at Velika planina, Tržič Museum highlights the ski competition at Zelenica, Museum of Apiculture in Radovljica presents breeding stations which are located on the way to the Roblekov dom mountain hut on Mt. Begunjščica, Museum of Gorenjska in Kranj pays tribute to the 40th anniversary of the first Slovenian ascent of Mount Everest, the preparation of which took place at Jošt mountain in Kranj, the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana with its exhibition Mountain Paradise invites visitors to reflect upon our past and present attitude to mountains, which can be internalized on Golica mountain. By May 2020, mountains and museums will become a cache of adventure!

Velika planina - Unique Alpine Pearl

Velika planina is the largest pastureland in Slovenia, which is situated on almost a thousand hectares of the large, vibrant Karst plateau, at an average height of about 1500 metres. Today Velika planina is surrounded by rare spruce forests and mountain pines and is sown with typical karstic sinkholes. Veternica cave is the most popular natural site of interest on Velika planina. It is assembled of the caves Mala Jama and Velika Veternica. On the plain plateau, the forest has been withdrawn from the pastures centuries ago. The soft green lawns between the sinkholes gave the ideal conditions for the annual grazing of the cattle. In the summer the meadows are pink and white from Nigritella nigra, an endemic flower of this region.

Throughout the centuries, shepherds have built herdsmen's settlement on the mountain. It is known as one of few the settlements of such size in Europe and attracts many visitors throughout the year. It is distinct by its typical oval architecture which symbolises Velika planina. The roofs are covered with pine shingles, which extend rather low. The name of the cottage in the Kamnik part of Velika planina is “a herdsman hut” or “a shepher’s home”, and a pine shingle is called “šinkel”. In winter, the cottages are available for rent, which is a unique feature.
