The second CITO season of 2019 starts in September so come along to the Yorkshire in Bloom Gold award winning cemetery and earn your second CITO week souvenir . Without the efforts of volunteers, the cemetery could not operate as the wildlife and visitor haven it is today.
York Cemetery is a working burial ground. At the same time, it provides opportunities for conservation, education, and informal recreation within a protected environment close to York city center. Volunteers contribute in many ways, helping to maintain and develop the wild and beautiful 24-acre site, rich in local history and ecology.
Last year’s September CITO event here was such a great success we thought we’d repeat it again this year and make some more winter bird feeders for our feathered friends, so come along, don some latex gloves and grease yourself up for a morning of ‘smushing’
We will spend an hour or two making the feeding balls, have a cup of tea and a bun and then head out onto site to hang a few up, we'd like to make enough that we can store some for the winter months. Hopefully we will be working outside weather permitting, but we do have a 'Plan B' in case the weather turns.
You could also take the opportunity to grab the cemetery traditional, multi, puzzle and earth caches whilst you are here.
Important information, please read.
York Cemetery – Keep on tweeting CITO
Saturday 14th September 2019
10:00am - 1:00pm
Firstly if you are planning to come then please log a 'will attend' note, mention how many will be in your group, this is extremely important as it will ensure we source the right volume of ingredients to make the feeding balls.
Meet us at the rear of the Cemetery Chapel for introductions and a brief H&S chat. We will be the ones wearing bright orange. Come and introduce yourself as Geocachers if you've not been before, there will not be an event log book to sign until after the event, but we will have a site attendance sheet for you to sign, this must be signed with your real world name and not caching name, this is an insurance requirement for the site, if you do not sign this then you may not be able to work on site, sorry, but we have to be quite strict about this.
We will be providing all the material and tools needed to make the feeding balls, but if you want to chip in then simply bring a block of lard or a bag of seeds/nuts with you, everything will get used eventually.
Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times. No dogs are allowed in the cemetery, apart from registered assistance dogs. Please remember that this is a working cemetery and there will probably be people visiting graves.
Our tasks on the day may change depending on the weather, we will update the listing and make announcements accordingly, please ensure you have logged a 'will attend' to receive these updates.
