Geocache Description:

Mikelbaka

[LV]

Miķeļbāka atrodas Baltijas jūras Kurzemes piekrastē un apzīmē Irbes jūras šauruma bīstamo Mihaila sēkli. Pirmo reizi 1749. gadā to uzmērīja Krievijas kara flotes mičmanis Mihails Rjabiņins, viņam par godu šo sēkli arī nosauca Mihaila vārdā.

Miķeļbāka Lighthouse is situated on Kurzeme shore of the Baltic Sea and marks the dangerous Mikhails Shoal of the Irbe Strait. It was for the first time measured in 1749 by Mikhail Ryabinin, a midshipman of the Russian Navy. The shoal was named after him, but with time the name was ‘latvianized’ to become Miķelis. The same name was given also to the lighthouse.

The construction work of Miķeļbāka Lighthouse was completed in 1884 and the first light signal was transmitted on 15th of August 1885. Miķeļbāka Lighthouse is the first lighthouse in Latvia to use electric lightning.

It took long time and several rebuilding works to lighthouse look as for today. First cracks in it’s walls appeared already in 1895. After that lighthouse was repaired and circled with steel straps. Anyway during World War I, 12 artillery missiles hit Miķeļbāka Lighthouse and the tower was in critical condition - in stormy weather it started swaying. In 1929 it was decided to dismantle the lighthouse and build new tower of reinforced concrete. The new tower was bilt in 1934. Unfortunately in 1941 during World War II Soviet army blew up the lighthouse. Lighthouse as you see it now, was built in 1957.

The height of the light in Miķeļbāka Lighthouse is 59 meters and the light is visible from the distance of 14 nautical miles. Lighthouse acts also as radiolocation lighthouse - responder (Racon).

Miķeļbāka Lighthouse is not available for visitors.
